Re: [Killietalk] real Test! The Gold Australe
The gold (or red or orange) color morph of the Aphyosemion australe is
normal and is found in nature. Apparently, the loss of camouflage coloration
is deadly in nature and they are not found very often. We protect them in
our tanks, so this color morph survives and often outnumbers the normal
chocolate colored fish. As you know, the gold was actually given a name in
the early years, but this has been discontinued and both colors are A.
australe.
A great fish and one of the first in the hobby. In early years, our annual
shows had a class for this species alone! That was true for Fundulopanchax
sjoestedti as well, but this practice has been abandoned and the numbers of
fish entered has dropped considerably. AUS is still displayed in larger
numbers than SJO (note the old fashioned code designation?), but the number
of gold AUS usually outnumbers the chocolate. So be it; the chocolate is
still THE AUS for me!
