Re: [Killietalk] Bringing fish in from Canada to the USA
Legally it would require an importation license and a $55 fee to bring
ANY fish across the border. US Fish and Wildlife Agency is the ones
that set that requirement up now a days. Even if i tried to bring a
pair of Guppies across the border it is considered a Commercial
Importation now. The rules are a bit overdone but if i want to bring
any fish back legally from Canada now when i attend my aquarium club
meetings in Montreal i have to do it at the Border that crosses at
Champlain New York. That is the only border on Northern New York that
has a fish and wildlife agent there on duty each day. If i Cross at
Trout River or Massena and have fish they will be comfiscated or i have
to await the border agent to arrive from Champlain, pay his travel
costs, pay the importation fee and show my importation license.
Laugh and say Ha.... i never do that or My border dont require that if
you live somewhere else in the country then you should consider yourself
lucky they dont inforce the law or you're lucky that they dont care.
Here in Northern New York they do! This new inforcement of this law is
The Major reason i rarely go to my club meetings for the past 2 1/2
years in Montreal... Yes the Montreal Aquarium Society ( English
Speaking ) is the nearest club to me and they are a great club. Ive
just decided that its a long drive now to go and not be able to bring
any fish back, that and the outrageous price of Gasoline make the 320
mile roundtrip not worth going anymore.
You can always sneak the fish across the border and not claim them, but
if you get caught then you're in big trouble. I would check at your
local border you intend to cross what they require you to have to bring
back some fish before making the trip and then losing the fish or paying
the big fee.
