I know the old australe (not yet caled chocolate, known as Cape Lopez 
Lyretail) were in the hobby in the very early 1950's when I first got mine. 
I think the strain was probably the one from the early 1920's.  They were 
not as dark as the "chocolates" but had much nicer body and fin colors and 
looked a lot like the one in Axelrod&Schultz handbook and my current Port 
Gentile strain (located near Cape Lopez from whet I have been able to learn. 
I always thought the chocolates were developed in backlash to the gold 
sports that started to show up in the mid to late 1960's.
