Re: [Killietalk] Food quality and egg production
That might be the secondary question. It's hard to measure increased egg
production in killies, since so much of it is normally done in bursts. With
things like catfish and tetras, etc., high quality live foods (blackworms,
white worms, etc.) usually brings about spawning by causing ovarian eggs to
rapidly ripen (it always takes at least a couple of days, but usually you
can expect results within two weeks). Now to address the more important
issue, and this is something Martin Moe described years ago in relation to
clownfish. If you greatly increase the nutrition of the adults (he added
fresh frozen shrimp to the diet, and other sources of rich oils), the
survival rate of the babies goes way up. That I think is the real benefit of
a good diet for the adult fish. By good diet I mean live food primarily (but
not BBS), frozen food secondarily (good stuff like shrimp and beef heart),
and an end to reliance on cans of flakes.
