I've also had daphnia hatch out of bags of peat along with
Austrolebias nigripinnis. Quite nice, really. To restart a culture
you could probably put it in a warm place and allow it to
evaporate...leave it for 2 weeks or so to dry thoroughly and maybe
freeze it for a few days to mimic the passing of a season. Then rewet
the dirt and perhaps daphnia will hatch.
