[Killietalk] daphnia eggs
Ok I know they are not eggs but I was not going to
try and remember the name and spelling. It happened to
come up rescently on the AKA forums. It was one of
those weird things as I was going to ask the same
thing. I think it was Barry's advice to read something
in the library on the site which I did with no real
answer. I use daphnia in my fry boxes when the fry
reach about a week old. By this time the fry can eat
the new born daphnia. I was gone most of the weekend
so the tanks stayed dark for the most part. My daphnia
cultures are on a bottom shelve and the light never
goes off but our frequent short power failures. One of
the 3 upper shelf fry boxes daphnia looked weird when
I took the time to clean the fry boxes and tanks after
the rough weekend(one night spend in the ER with a
friend). I fed the tanks and gave all the fry boxes
with daphnia a splash of green water like normal from
time to time from Thur. through Tues.. Well Yesterday
it looked like someone sprinkled black pepper all in
the fry box. Most of the daphnia looked normal again.
I think it was the dark color from the egg cases that
made then look unusual.
I want to store these eggs as a back up if the
cultures crash. Does anyone have an idea how to store
and get these eggs to hatch? Like how long can they be
stored before hatching. What triggers have you used to
get them to hatch and duration? In the article from
the AKA library on live foods they list drying the
eggs, cold shock/storage and a few other things but
does not give any time frame.
Next is how to reproduce the results of getting eggs.
Again the article list several things that can work
with one of them being daylight length which is what I
think triggered this one box as it was the one corner
and I never turned the tank lights on just the room
light. I know they were not starved into production of
eggs as more boxes with daphnia in them would have
done this before now as they have went a week without
being fed green water. Cold and hot water were also
given as reasons.
I was sent some eggs from a person on this list
which did not ever hatch for me. He sent them on a
paper towel and I wet them apon arrival. I am thinking
I was missing the incubation triggers like drying
Notho. eggs. Maybe they needed either a longer dry
spell or a cold spell before hatching them. This is
the reason I came to the list as the forums do not get
used by all. Hope yall can help.
