Re: [Killietalk] WAS Sex Raitos

I am all for it. I loved the experiment but like Ken
I see the negatives in all things without thinking
about it. Why is it when I walk into store I see
points that need to be improved for safety or crime
prevention? Just because I see something and say here
is a problem does not mean I dislike the store. A good
example is I was in a pet shop that had a black fish
show room with no lights except the fish tank lights.
You could not see the floor. I made a comment to an
employee that they really need some lighting on the
floor as if someone tripped on anything or even
nothing they could sue and win the law suit because of
it. No one was aound when I made this comment. I had
already been in the store for 30 minutes or so and had
some supplies in my hands to purchase. I was asked to
leave the store and not return. I thought I was being
kind and helpful. I could not find my post as
negative. Critical yes but not negative. Hind sight is
20/20, forsight is being blind to all the things that
will happen. Some of these can be avoided by reading
what others have done. For example, these kids with no
real guidence may have tried to do this experiment
without any water changes as may home aquarist do not
do water changes but every 6 months to a year. But
they took the advice given from different sources and
in my opinion avoided sick or dead fish. I was not
part of the AKA when the quest for supplies was put
forth. I had no killies at that time unless I might
have had the golden wonders started so I was of no
help. Why does some one need a degree to do good
sceince? Eistien(my spelling like his is awful) only
had something like 4th grade education and yet he is
the thought of by many as the best sceintist to ever
live. He later got Honorary degrees. You have to
follow some simple rules to have good sceince. Follow
these simple rules, which were taught in 7 grade when
I was in school, and you could be the next Nobel prize
winner in theory.

Mike if you are still following I hope this explains
atleast my post. I now have a fish with a known sex
ratio growing in my enviroment. So even a small set up
with 10 fish(pair in 5 tanks) will to me give me a
better result than what the article gave me, since you
had a fish with an unknown sex ratio under those
conditions. With the added information of the single
fry per tank it looks like the whole set of fry gave
roughly 50/50 with the pair to a tank being a bit
heavier on males. But since this fish had not been
raised in this conditioned tap water and tempature
before the experiment you had no reason to suspect
anything but 50/50 from the fry even if grown together
in on large vat/tank. This was to me your weakest link
in your experiment as I stated before. But my
experiment will be critisized even more because it
will be done with a low number of fry and my less than
ideal water change schedule. I sometimes do water
changes every 2-3 days and sometimes it is more like
10 days between water changes. The main reason is it
is done by hand and my disability keeping me from
doing them some days.

So Mike please tell those kids thanks if you ever see
them around. Their ground work helped me to make a
better experiment even though more limited. So I like
many others doing sceintific experiments will be
standing on their shoulders(ground work). This is why
I critisized different points to help make the next
one if it is ever done even better.
