[Killietalk] sex ratios
Mike, Far be it for me to criticize the efforts of your students. They are
to be applauded for their efforts and perseverance!
I am just relating my own personal experiences with two fry per container
and my results. I use wide-mouth Rubbermaid 1/2 gallon jars with a wee bit
of Java Moss and a snail in them and do minimal water changes. Thus far I
have found only two species that I could not get pairs from using this
technique and that may have been my own fault by changing too much water at
an inopportune time. My best example is Leptolebias aureoguttatus which
gives all males and you hope to get a single female to continue your line.
I used high pH wqith very limited success and temperature control to no
avail. However, placing two to a jar gives me a pair every time! I also
noted that at various times I had a fry hatch and grow in my adult's
breeding tank with the presence of an adult male. All these turned into
females.
