Re: [Killietalk] (no subject)

Hey Allen!

That is a male Procatopus, one of the larger lampeyes from Central Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon...) . The awful name given it in the photo ID is a made up genus. The species is wrong, since panchax is a species of Aplocheilus found throughtout Southern and Southeast Asia.

I wish you have given the URL for the specific auction. That person's ability to ID the fish sets off alarm bells for me.

The quality of the photo (much like my photos) and my modest ability at identifying lampeyes means someone else will have to suggest whether it is Procatopus nototaenia, aberrans or (less likely) similis.

If you didn't get the bid, take a look at Procatopus nototaenia *Kribi*--- group of 6 wild

I do not know who the seller, sb from Houston, is, but that party shows their familiarity with lampeyes as schooling fish. I have had a similar sized group of P. similis in a planted 29-gallon tank. I do need to get a small power filter on there, but they are doing fine. They, unlike so many killies, are good swimmers and do better in schools.

"Lampeyes, the killies for tetra nuts."

They lay large eggs, though the eggs are not very likely to stick to mop fibers. Mops can be used, just pull them out gingerly, grabbing the mop by the top and bottom. The fry have very small mouths and need something smaller than newly hatched bbs.

The reflective ability of Procatopus is dazzling. I've set them up where the afternoon sun can just electrify the aquarium.

Are you the Allen who attended the May CKA meeting?

We hope to have a breeder's roundtable for our next (Sept.) meeting. These will undoubtedly be among those who will be discussed. I haven't visited the AKA forum on lampeyes (on the AKA site) much, but you will find some ideas on them there too.

Whether you won that bid or get them through another, Procatopus are neat killies to own and put in a display tank. Their fry can certainly be raised. You will love them.

All the best!

I saw this fish on Aquabid and just couldn't resist--you know the
feeling, I'm sure! Can anyone identify it or tell me anything about its
care. I am new to Killies and just getting my feet wet. Any help will be
greatly appreciated.
