Re: [Killietalk] Paint a glass tank

The best paint to use is Rustoleum Oil Base Paint. You can also use Ace
Hardware Indoor/Outdoor Rust Stop. The same product and it is about a buck
cheaper. A quart will do a lot of tanks. I have been painting aquariums with
this for over 30 years. I paint the backs and bottoms ( if they are bare
bottom). Use a 2" sponge brush with the wooden handle. The secret here is
not to use cheap sponge brushes. Lay the paint on thick and spread it
around. Let sit and it will dry overnight. The finish is even and looks
great when it is dry. If you want to change colors or you don't want to have
the tank painted in the future, a razorblade scraper will take the paint off
in ribbons. I use the hunter green color, but I have used black, blue and
brown. The paint is non toxic when dry. It is very tough once dry. My friend
has a fish shop and we painted the backs of his tanks with this 16 years ago
and the paint looks as good today as it did 16 years ago.
