My water is pretty hard and I use 2 tablespoons of "Mortons Kosher Canning
&Pickling Salt" in 2 liters of water (a Pepsi Bottle full). Works great for
me. When, in a pinch, I used "Plain Salt" I got no hatches at all!!! Beats
me as what the difference is but, apparently, there is a difference.

I use 16 solar salt pellets for 2/3 gallon of my medium hard tap water
(90-100 ppm CaCO3). If your tap water is very soft, add some baking soda or
lime
water. If you want to spend a lot more money use a marine salt mix.
