I use Amazon frogbit as my floating plant cover on most of my tanks.
It grows very quickly has fairly large leaves and doesnt clog out things
like duckweed can.  The root structure on fully mature plants can go
down as far as 5 inches in my larger tanks... really helps keep the
water quality in those tanks very good.   Plus its a wonderful plant to
trade and give to the pet stores as it grows so fast.

Maybe you should try this in that debruyn set up..
