Re: [Killietalk] Egg Decapsulation
Got to admit I never de-capsulate. Basically what is the point? Nature
provides fresh food in the form of dried eggs. Easy to hatch out when you
want them. I do have 2 points to raise in praise of de-capsulation.
#1 They hatch faster & are ready in case of unexpected hatches. Keep a bit
refridgerated.
#2 De-capsulated non hatching eggs float for ages making them great food for
top feeders such as Aphyosemion, Epiplatys etc. This is a bit more tricky to
do. I have to take my hat off to the Russians who have a great product.
Forget Cyclopeeze............
Their is a legitimate case for both areas. I get fantastic ready
de-capsulated eggs from Siberia. I hate advertising the stuff on this forum
but my opinion on de-capsulation is buy from Siberia for a great price &
save yourself the hassle.
Killies are one of the worst category of fish to feed dried foods. Young
fish easily adapt to new feedstuffs but broodstock or wild fish can be a
problem in introducing a new feed to.
Killie brood stock especially wild need live foods. In the summer it's easy
to provide Daphnia, Bloodworm, mosquito larvae etc., but live feed in winter
is another story. We use Glass larvae in these months in the UK. Loads of
time fishing out this stuff waist deep in freezing water sometimes with a
crust of ice.
Crazy now we can get it freeze dried from Siberia as an addition to normal
granular feeds. Why go to the trouble when tons of it are available for a
good price?
I'm completely amazed at how much of this new generation feed is out there &
how easily mixes can be done to provide cheap feeds for our fish throughout
the year.
