Re: [Killietalk] 1st Coventioneer's

I attended an AKA conveniton about 1970 with two friends. Had a great time.
Dropped out from 75 thru 1999 due to work and family (happens a lot in this
hobby-time is where you put it). In 2000, I restarted my fish and
contacted Jim Robinson of the CKA asking when the CKA convention was being
held. Only about 300 miles from me. He politely told me "it's this week
you idiot, get up here!!!" My kind of guy - not exactly shy. I could not
find anyone local that wanted to go along so I just packed my bag and headed
up alone. I could not get a room reservation the first night at the host
hotel so got a room reserved locally down the street. While waiting in line
to register apparently I looked a bit anxious. I wanted to get to my hotel
to sign in so was a little antsy (could not easily sleep in my little
Fiero). It was noticed by a couple of guys near me in line. They just
arrived from the far west. They asked me what I was worried about and I
told them. They said; "Cancel it and come on in our room." I did. Later a
small group, including me, all went out to eat. I was treated absolutely
great. Never met anyone at the convention I remembered from 1970 or prior
years but felt like I knew everyone from childhood. This is what the hobby
should be all about. Everyone that knows me is painfully aware that I am not
shy or introverted so that is a big factor, however there are enough like me
to drag in shy newcomers and make them feel at home. I send a lot of on
line South eastern newcomers to Harry Specht as I know he will treat them as
I would. I now know enough good AKAers around the country to try to get
newbies into their fold. I know Harry does not mind helping out. I regret
having missed this years convention but will be at Columbus (Cinci club) in
the fall and WAKO in the spring if I have to walk to get there.
