Re: [Killietalk] flubendazole or other drug to kill snails

I have some Kribs that seem to have aquired a taste for snails, I don't know if they eat MTS, but they keep the small generic snails under control very nicely.

Come to think of it, they may eat MTS, I gave my girlfriend some plants and now she has an infestation of MTS. We can't think of any other source, but I've never seen them in any of my tanks.

I apologize in advance because I'm sure this is bound to offend some of the more sensitive readers on this list.

But... Here goes... A local aquarium store here in Huntsville has discovered a great - non chemical - way of controlling snails.

OK. If you have a weak stomach hit delete now...

The solution is... gulp... Goldfish.

I know! I know! As tropical exotic fish hobbyists we find the keeping of this water fouling carp indoors a disgusting, despicable habit. (Exceptions can be made for those of us with outdoor ponds!) But they have a 6" long split tail goldfish that they move from tank to tank to control snails. They just plop him into whatever tank has the most snails and he cleans them up. He loves them so much that now, when the workers put a net into his tank, he swims into it on his own! Ready to go to the next snail infested tank!!!

So, since no self respecting aquarist would keep a goldfish, my suggestion is, find a neighbor with a pond and borrow a goldfish for a few days. And if you don't have such a neighbor, you might have to just find the courage to go into your LFS (maybe you could find one out-of-town, where nobody knows you, I guess that would be an OOTFS) and purchase your own, and, gulp, set up a tank for him. Just pray that you don't eventually find that, oh heaven forbid, you like him.

Actually that's not quite correct. Flubendazole is not an ingredient in
any commercially available anthelmintic that I know of. However,
fenbendazole is and if flubendazole works, so should the latter. For
that matter, if flubendazole works, Fluketabs probably will too.

Flubendazole and fenbendazole (and a whole group of other imidazole
anthelminitics) are functionally equivalent. Flubendazole was the drug
of choice for our use as it is the most water soluble of the group.

I make these comments purely for the accuracy of the record and so that
a DVM won't say "we don't have anything with flubendazole"! What Bob
says is "functionally correct".
