Re: [Killietalk] Attendance at events
One guys two cents:
It all comes down to whether you want to go or not.
For some of us, learning more about killies is more fun than anything else.
And there's always more to learn. I've found a convention the absolute best
time and place to do this. We get speakers from all over the world telling
us about their most recent collecting trips. We get a chance to meet the
most proficient breeders and ask them any question we might think of. And,
of course, there's the opportunity to bid on any and all of the 500+ fish in
the competition and the N&RSC display.
Blaah, blaah, blaah, I've said that all before.
But it's a matter of priorities. Is this important to an individual or not?
If getting the kids to the soccer game is more important they won't be
there. If cash for the latest movie, tickets to see the Stones in concert,
the baseball game down town, a trip to Six Flags to ride the roller coaster
are more important, that's their call.
The convention is for people who really enjoy it and if they have other
priorities, so be it. Nothing worthwhile is free (or even cheap nowadays).
There's no way we can make a convention cheap or free.
I don't think we want to mass-market the convention to everyone. It's for
people who CARE about killies. If the Stones concert or the soccer game is
more important, that's where they'll spend the money that's left after
Exxon-Mobil has bled them almost dry for the month.
I see the same sort of thing with live music nowadays. People just STAY HOME
a lot. Our homes have gotten all too comfortable (at large expense) for
people to get out of them. They've spent thousands of bucks on home theatre
systems that they just HAD to have (my gosh, the neighbor got one last
month!). No wonder there's nothing($) left to go to a convention and meet
LIVE people outside their living room.
I could rant about this for pages, so I'd better stop.
[But then, what really is the issue here? I bet this year's convention ends
up with a record number of attendees. Are we beating this horse for no real
reason at all? The "number's aren't really down at all.]
Local shows? My personal opinion is that they're just expecting too much. If
your show is local expect it to be LOCAL. Plan to have your club members and
design the show for them. You don't need to blow your wad ($)expecting
people to come from Tunisia and Singapore to see your local show. Design it
for your 2 dozen members and budget accordingly.

Gas prices are an issue, scheduling is an issue. Interest is not. One can
be
very interested, and still not have the money or time to attend an event.
