If airfare goes up, it will be slowly and subtly. Any airline that doubles
prices quickly will be filing chapter 11 shortly thereafter. The motto in
the airline industry is "an empty seat is lost forever". Whenever prices
go up demand certainly goes down some and they try to find the point where
they maximize their returns, not the price of an individual ticket.
There's no doubt the entire airline industry is in financial trouble,
especially compared to most other industries that are benefiting from the
booming economy. But that's a stockholder and employee problem more than
for the customers. Fuel costs are gonna hurt everyone (not equally,
unfortunately) and it might hurt attendence some, but I doubt it's the
most significant factor overall, though it certainly could be for some
people.
