Re: [Killietalk] WCW Show results

It's true that attendance was down on the previous two years but it was
not disastrous. I don't know what the "record low" for WCW is, as NWK
has only hosted the show for the last 3 years, with much help from
members of BAKA and other west coast clubs, I should add. I am told by
BAKA "old-timers" that there have been lean years before. The reason for
the relatively low attendance this year probably has more to do with
coincidence that anything else. A lot of our regulars could not attend
because of business or personal commitments or illness. There isn't much
we can do about that. I will also admit that we had a "down" year in
terms of the ability of NWK members to work hard on attracting
attendees, for similar reasons. That is not to denigrate the efforts of
those who did work on preparing for and running the show.

We were initially discouraged because it did not appear that we'd get a
lot of attendees, but quite a few turned up "at the last minute" and the
attendance for the auction was good. I think the feeling in NWK is that
we want to see WCW continue and that we (I mean everyone involved) need
to be a little better organized in getting ready for it. We don't feel
that one somewhat low year is necessarily a predictor of the future. If
we had two or three successive years of bad attendance, then we'd be
worried.

Everyone will have seen Peter's editorial in JAKA about the need for the
AKA to move forward. I agree with him that we need to learn how to be
successful in the environment in which we find ourselves now. How to
organize and exploit regional and national shows to benefit the hobby
and the organization is an important component of that. My own feeling
is that we should encourage a modest number of large regional shows in
addition to the convention. At the moment, I don't think the convention
is threatened by the "mini-conventions", as they have come to be called.
However, perhaps the mini-conventions threaten one another. I think is
is very likely that most AKA members and others will elect to attend a
limited number of events, so that if we were to have many
mini-conventions, they would suffer from competition amongst themselves.
Personally I'd like to see only 3-4 of these such that they are all good
and all successful. I can see one in the west (WCW), one in the NE
(NEW), one in the mid-west (?) and possibly one in the SE being
reasonable. In my opinion, it is up to the affiliate clubs to organize
such a mini-convention for their region. In other words, for this scheme
to work, the affiliates need to collaborate and share in the benefits.
That might mean some clubs incorporating their own individual shows into
a regional mini-convention.

This is a good topic for discussion. Perhaps we should set up a forum
under the Member Forums on the AKA site in order to continue the
discussion in an organized way, such that the thread can be easily followed.
