Re: [Killietalk] Fruit fly problems
I use the same containers you have found at
.brianstropicals.com but I get them at the local
Deli. I cut a few holes into the top and glue
some coffee filter pad to it. It works and cost
is about 50¢ . The Quart containers are
available lots of places - like food stores,
which have a deli, our local food stores have
them.
For something to climb onto I use wadded up waxed
paper, about 6" of it off the roll. Some use
Wooden Excelsior, strings of wood used in those
swamp coolers of the southern states, but waxed
paper is just fine for 3 to 4 weeks. Lots of
other things work, a couple of wooden tongue
suppressors or other sticks. Carolina suggests
some yeast be added at the start up for the
culture.
Comment about the fly medium, the blue dye is to
dye the intestines of the fly maggot so the
salvia glands may be seen more easily. The
preservative is Methyl parabin and it is in both
the blue and colorless(white) Carolina Medium.
I keep 5 cultures going at the same time and
clean out one and restart it every 2 weeks. I
have more flies than my Epps can eat. The Bettas
love them and most fish can be trained to take
them.
Pictures at 7 . . . .
Change as much water as often as you can!
