Thanks to all that replied on the subject.
The stoppers I use are sometimes plain sponge, sometimes pieces of scrub
pads, sometimes filter floss. The cultures I have produce lots of flies
initially, but come 10th to 14th day, there is no fly left; all subsequent
flies emerging from pupae will stick to the walls and that's where it all
goes away.
I have tried this about 15 times, but never had real success.
For better ventialtion, I am considering to order the funky containers made
for fruit flies such as these:
