Re: [Killietalk] West Coast Weekend Schedule of events -- Tirbak's talk history talk
Hi Barry,
Sorry for the delay in answering. I was chaperoning a school trip covering Seattle, Vancouver and Vancouver Island. It turned into a whirlwind trip, so I saw alot but at a very fast clip. I'd recommend the Horseshoe Bay ferry ride from Vancouver city to Vancouver Island to everyone -- gorgeous. The Capilano Bridge is something else as are the Sooke Pot Holes and French Beach on Vancouver island. Victoria felt like a tourist trap but the Bug Zoo and the First Nation Exhibit at the BC Museum were first rate and the island itself was beautiful. Made you wonder what this land would be like without its European conquest and land grab. I can see why Brian retired there. The whole area felt so clean, healthy and invigorating -- so unlike the Texas swamp I live in. If the move to NY does not pan out as I hope, you can expect me in the Pacific NW asap. I fell in love with it. It is my kind of "town".

Bobby,
It is interesting, the attitude to green space and the environment over
here. As in the east, though, it tends to be a city vs rural thing.
Cities like Seattle, Portland, Eugene and Corvallis are very liberal and
very strong on environmental issues. Rural areas are much less so. I
live in a little town called Sweet Home (8,000 population). It is a
beautiful environment. We can get to the coast in a couple of hours, and
into the high mountains of the Cascades in an hour (we live in the
foothills, hence the snow on the ground right now). However, I think I'd
be afraid to admit in public down in the town that I vote Democrat. This
is an ex-logging town, ex- because of those damn greens and to hell with
the spotted owl. Oregon is a Democratic state, but only because of the
cities. It is exactly like NY in that way.
I have been trying to get up to see Brian since he moved over to
Nanaimo, but we haven't been able to make our schedules mesh yet. Soon,
I hope. He will, of course, be speaking at WCW XV.
What were you doing over here anyway?
