Re: [Killietalk] Updated web site

Lonny,

We only updated the site yesterday, so any failure prior to that was not due to the update. The new method is simpler in the sense that all the info is now in one module and so is entered on one page. In the old system, you had to enter some basic information in the system's core user database, then additional information in the AKA Membership database. Now it is all in one database.

I have attached detailed instructions for entering new members and editing existing users. As previously, if you know that a new member has already registered on the site, please try to find their record and edit it, rather than starting a new one. Also, please don't do anything with the other options visible to you (Categories, Fields and Permissions). It would really mess things up if those were changed.

You are welcome to call me at 5412-367-2568 if you want to talk through any of this.

Barry,

I got your phone message last night. I have been at back to back
trade shows for work for the past four weeks. Today is the last day. I went
to do some up dates the other day and couldn't get on, and then I read your
e-mail. I will call you tonight after dinner. I have quite a few updates and
new members to process. It will probably be about 7:30 EST tonight.

Subject: [Killietalk] Updated web site

Hello again all,

I should point out that with the update of the web site there is a
difference in the way email addresses are displayed. On the old system,
we had written a special module to display AKA member number, email
address, first name, last name etc, which weren't handled the way we
needed by the basic CMS. The new version of the CMS allows us to enter
fields in the core user profiles module, avoiding the need to have a
special module. This is not of much interest to most of you, but is much
better from an administration point of view.

The point of all this is that there is a setting in the core user
profiles module in which you can set whether you want your email address
visible to other site members. If this is set to No, then other members
won't be able to contact you by email if they do a search, for example
to find members in their state. I would encourage everyone to set this
to Yes. I want to assure you that this won't expose you to email
harvesting bots because you have to be registered on the site to see
user profiles at all, and the emails are stored in a database, not as
text in a file on the server. You can do this by clicking Manage Profile
at the top or User Profiles on the left.

I would also appreciate it if you could check your settings for
Notifications - I would recommend "Notify me of all selected updates",
which will allow you to indicate that you want to be notified of posts
in a forum thread, for example. Also check Notification method - you can
choose Email, which will send an email if a new post appears where you
asked to be notified, or Private Message, which will appear in your
Inbox when you log on to the site.

Again, if you need help, email me.
