[Killietalk] Updated web site
Hello again all,
I should point out that with the update of the web site there is a
difference in the way email addresses are displayed. On the old system,
we had written a special module to display AKA member number, email
address, first name, last name etc, which weren't handled the way we
needed by the basic CMS. The new version of the CMS allows us to enter
fields in the core user profiles module, avoiding the need to have a
special module. This is not of much interest to most of you, but is much
better from an administration point of view.
The point of all this is that there is a setting in the core user
profiles module in which you can set whether you want your email address
visible to other site members. If this is set to No, then other members
won't be able to contact you by email if they do a search, for example
to find members in their state. I would encourage everyone to set this
to Yes. I want to assure you that this won't expose you to email
harvesting bots because you have to be registered on the site to see
user profiles at all, and the emails are stored in a database, not as
text in a file on the server. You can do this by clicking Manage Profile
at the top or User Profiles on the left.
I would also appreciate it if you could check your settings for
Notifications - I would recommend "Notify me of all selected updates",
which will allow you to indicate that you want to be notified of posts
in a forum thread, for example. Also check Notification method - you can
choose Email, which will send an email if a new post appears where you
asked to be notified, or Private Message, which will appear in your
Inbox when you log on to the site.
Again, if you need help, email me.
