[Killietalk] once again, trying to get K. caudomarginatus
Reading Allan Semeit mention John Boylan inspires me once again to advertise
my profound research need
for Kryptolebias (formerly Rivulus) caudomarginatus. I got a good stock from
John many years ago, but
one of my technicians at the time got careless and lost it in the F2
generation, and I have never been able to
get live animals since. I can use specimens in any form, live, frozen, or
fixed in alcohol (not formalin).
The stock is needed for making important comparisons with K. marmoratus. K.
caudomarginatus is the
nearest thing to a conventionally-reproducing sister species that we have.
Traditionally in the K.
marmoratus world, comparisons have been made to R. cylindraceus, but we now
know that the two are not
nearly closely related enough for these to be informative except in the most
general way. Other
Kryptolebias would be of interest, but K. caudomarginatus is the key
comparison..
I had the funds and the means to go to Brazil myself to collect K.
caudomarginatus (along with sympatric K.
marmoratus) for over 10 years, but could not get collecting permits to do
this. This past September I had
the totally sickening experience of watching these monies (about $15K) finally
be resorbed by the bean
counters at my university. It's an experience I never want to repeat. I
still have enough funds to purchase
specimens, however.
Please pass this note on to whatever other lists you think might be
productive.
