Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 31, Issue 19
"I have raised and spawned discus in my 160-200 TDS, pH 7.6 water with

more than frequent water changes."
I agree that water changes are key. We also see that many fish have a wider
range of water parameters then we may suspect. However I will tell you this.
Try to breed wild Discus with that water and you will fail guaranteed. Many
have shared their experience with many Killies that may come form softer
water but will breed in most any Tap water. I do no dispute these accounts.
However I must say that water changes alone will not be enough for many
species. We still must offer the proper water parameters.
So take that with a grain of salt. Not all fish will breed in any old water.
Yes water changes are key. But there are many species that demand specific
water chemistry for successful husbandry of that species. IN this case tank
bred "domesticated" Discus may have successful reproduction in hard water,
wild Discus will not. This applies to many other species I can think of for
example many Tetra's. Give them all the water changes you want with Hard
water, you still will never raise a single fry. I can go on but you get my
point.
basically I agree we do not have to go overboard about water chemistry and
so forth but we also need to keep in mind water changes alone with out the
proper water chemistry will be an exercise in futility for many species.
