Re: [Killietalk] Couple of questions
Hello All
One thing to keep in mind is that waste products also have a significant
effect on conductivity. If you have a automated salt system for
reconstituting RO (usually measured in the fish system) you have to be sure
that your water exchange is on the good side of the pollution equilibrium.
You need to exchange enough water to keep your nitrates on a downward trend
otherwise the nitrates slowly build up and their conductivity (and other
waste products) slowly replace the salts in a system. This can cause many
problems when you conductivity is mostly waste products instead of your salt
mix.

Yes. Low osmotic environments cause the cells to swell, with the potential
to rupture, or at least become dysfunctional. Gill cells would be vulnerable
due to their direct exposure. Fish need time to adapt to such changes, to
allow the mechanisms they possess for pumping ions in and out to adapt. In
biological systems water goes where ions go. There are no water pumps, but
there are water channels, that also can be up and down regulated.
