Re: [Killietalk] Couple of questions

Hi all,
I have a friend that regularly breeds his farowellas/sturisomas/rhinoloricarias. Seems like every time I go over there, he's got another clutch of eggs and some itty-bitty ones. He does do fairly large water changes, but with mostly RO water. The fish get algae wafers and lots of wood. The wood seems to be an integral part of their diet. His spawn on or next to the heater, and the male guards them well. I think it's a combination of diet and clean water that keeps them going. He does make sure the water temp is similar during a water change. And using mainly RO would not TDS shock a fish, I think.
  Hope this helps,
  Gary

I think we can have a case of over generalized information here. ken stated
his died from abrupt water changes. Perhaps TDS shock? Breeding will only
occur with frequent partial water changes from my experience. In fact after
water changes eggs were laid frequently.

This is a riverine species so I would caution those that want success with
them to read this and think they will benefit from a lack of water changes.
I did not find that to be true. Also I never saw any such reaction to water
changes so I think we need to precede with caution here. ken may have had a
ton of other variables that caused the demise of his fish. Anyway I just
wanted to further elaborate on my breeding report with that species.

Dave
