Re: [Killietalk] Killies in an Apartment
Keeping killies in an apartment is easy. It is really
a matter of keeping it simple. I have over 600 fish
and lost count of how many tanks and am 9 floors up.
It is just a matter of compromising and a bit of
planning in advance.
Racks simple bolt together ones. They normally can be
bought with a shelf rating eg 200kg per shelf.
Tanks I mainly use the plastic critter keepers, cheap
easy to work with and when not in use are easy to
store. I have a few 2' and 3' tanks I have scrounged
over time.
Filtration simple sponge filters. Lighting simple
fluoro bulbs mounted under each shelf. For reflectors
plastic board with foil glued on the inside to make a
6inch reflector around each shelf that can be hinged
up.
A set of gang valves for each shelf and a decent
airpump and power board and you are done.
Maintainance is equally simple, for water changes
siphon and bucket. But I use a big bucket so I can
drain half a dozen tanks in a few minutes. Then carry
that to the bathroom and bring back clean water to top
them up. It is not such a big deal. A couple of hours
every sunday afternoon. I normally spread water
changes out so I do xyz tanks every second week or so.
I keep a little sticker on each with the date of the
last water change.
It is really easy and no big problem, just think about
how best to use the space you have. I am lucky not to
have carpet, but to be honest most of the time when i
spill water it is really just through my own laziness,
impatience or stupidity.
But for an apartment killies are just about perfect.
Throw in some other small fish you like and you can
have an excellent setup just about anywhere. Even if
you cannot find a seperate room for it all, i know
lots of guys who can sneak a rack somewhere in the
place.
You can also go for flow through etc but personally
without a permanent fish room as a long term
commitment it is not worth the hassle of learning how
to be a plumber. Keep it simple, keep it cheap and
have fun.
