Re: [Killietalk] Killies in an Apartment
Hi Andy ...
First - welcome to the active part of the list. I might suggest you get
in touch with the folks in Metropolitan Area Killifish Assoc. if you haven't
already.
It easy to keep killies in an apartment and there is little to worry about
in terms of flooding your neighbors. You can build a stand with 2x4s that
will hold a fair number of 5- and 10-gallon tanks in a very small space.
Weight is rarely a concern if you keep in mind that the weight of the water
is spread over the entire frame of the stands, not in a single place. There
is some weird mathematical formula I am sure others can tell you.
From experience, I have never had a problem setting up a number of tanks
in an apartment and even ran about 30 tanks in a (on the third floor) closet
at one time.
My optimum design would be 3-tiers - top tier 2 1/2-gal mid-tier 5-gals
and bottom rack 10-gallons. A six-foot six-inch long rack (18-inches wide)
could hold upwards of 18 tanks.

Subject: [Killietalk] Killies in an Apartment
Hi everyone,
I have been lurking on this list for about a year. I am a fish addict
like you all having breed cichlids (old world and apistos), a few
killies and have kept a reef tank as well. I am fascinated by killies
(and poison dart frogs) at the moment. I live in an apartment in New
York City (Greenwich Village). I would love to set up a small rack
system without flooding my neighbors. Does anyone have experience
breeding killies in an apartment?
I would love to hear about it...
Best,
Andy
