Re: [Killietalk] Nostalgia, et...
I own a small shop, I'm the only employee<G> and I keep the shop small to
keep overhead down. I have a Petland in town as my competition, as well as
the Big W(the dreaded Walmart<G>) do they hurt? To a degree, but what I've
done is go with the flow. Birds are a big demand item, so I'm heavy on birds
and bird supplies. I try to keep at least a few oddball fish to keep folks
coming back to see what's new, I don't sell any animal I don't know as well
as I can know them, so 'advice' is a big selling point. I don't sell a lot
of fish meds as my goal is to teach my customers how to avoid the pitfalls
of disease, I do my best to help them become good fishkeepers. I preach
water changes, filter maintainance etc, and rarely do they experience an
outbreak of disease. Many have purchased fish from my competitors, and then
come back to me when those fish die, and take many tankmates with them.
The ability to change, and be flexible based on market demands, advice
people can trust, having the odd products they want, that's what keeps me
profitable, and I'm going to do my best to keep it that way!

ps- I do carry box filters<G>
