If I remember correctly the open ocean temp measurement study was started in
1968 and the temp had increased by 1.5 degrees celsius by 2000. The rate of
temperature increase is speeding up. Don't expect hurricanes to get any
better any time soon. There is a cycle of hurricane activity every 35-40
years, the raise in ocean temp may be related and may have very little to do
with human activity. I find this unlikely, as there is evidence we are
impacting the climate and atmosphere, but the fact is we just don't know.
