Re: [Killietalk] Natives in feeder goldfish tank's
Nick, et everyone....
In most metro areas I lived in, seems most LFS get their stock from a
handful of area wholesalers. Now depending on which farms the wholesalers
deal with, will determine the contaminant level in those feeders
Unfortunately, the assorted pygmy sunfish are larger and thus stick out like
sore thumbs. I found out that it is "usually" somewhere along the supply
chain that these fish meet their fate. Granted wholesalers usually won't
deal with non-retailers, but one time I managed to talk one into salvaging a
few freebies for me (they absolutely won't "sell" to you per se)
Here in N.Ohio, whichever wholesaler is peddling feeder guppies, I've found
about a 5-10% "native" flotsam in the tanks. Usually "green" mollies,
bluefin killies, another similar smaller "bluefin" type of kille, H.Formosa,
Flagfish and some type of darter. Why these species sell on AB for 2-4 bucks
each is beyond me, as I usually pay 15 cents "per" if I find a local LFS
willing to cherry pick for me...
If you live in Phx, AZ, sometimes that saltwater store near McClintock &
University has flagfish mixed in with the live brine shrimp. In Vegas, there
was a similar deal on Tropicana <I think> 1/2 between Sunrise & the strip
Another almost "guaranteed" source of natives is to buy live "tropical"
water lillies or parrots feather, et. Thing is most folks immediately place
goldfish in their ponds/containers and few eggs/fry survive the goldfishes
aggressive browsing. I am also sure damselfly nymphs take their toll, but if
you manage to stock a larger pond with live plants 1st w/o any adult fish,
almost guaranteed "something" will show up (mitigating factors being the
source & transport cond. of the aquatic plants)...I've done this a few times
and over the years, always had a variety of so called "minnows" show up in
my ponds & containers...which I only now realize were asst Fundulus, et.

200 at one time eh? Maybe a couple pairs of those 200 could find their way
to WI. ;)
