We were pushing the envelope to see what's toxic. I believe we were
exposing 50 fry in a 100 mls of water to a piece of material.
I think the main culprits are the plasticizers (especially in the artificial
rubbers and vinyl) and the uv inhibitors.

Interesting observations. I have used washers made of unknown rubber for
several years for my bulkheads without a problem. The bulkheads are
colorless nylon.
