Re: [Killietalk] Daphnia
I can absolutley see airless cultures working well outdoor with the wind &
temp difference turning the water over
But indoors? all my attempts crash more than I can tolerate...not sure
saving the $5 for a air pump or commiting a cpl xtra outlets is a "expense"
or bother given the crashes...also just not sure how to deal with the
inevitable film that forms to retard gas exchange and the issues therin
Also, I may be the only one using a box filter w/coarse material (gravel),
but it sure works, esp since it stretches water changes a lot...not seeing
all the dead/trapped daphnia either

After reading Dave Koran's post on his daphnia cultures, I just want to
remind everyone that there are two ways to get adequate oxygenation to any
tank or culture. The most common way is via surface agitation of the water
via a pump, and the second way is to increase the surface to volume ratio of
the culture by keeping the daphnia in shallow trays.
This works beautifully for me.
Also, by feeding a powdered food mix, although I do risk overfeeding and
polluting the cultures, if I am careful that is not a problem, and I avoid
the necessity of a second set of containers for greenwater or paramecium
generation. And if I do mess up, it is only one tray and I have several
going at a time. My trays are compact, silent, and don't
have to be plugged in. For someone with little space and no
inclination to setup extra tanks for live cultures, it may be worth
considering this lower-tech approach.
