Re: [Killietalk] PotatoFlakes/FruitFlies

Dear FishFolk,

I just made up a big bag of drosophila media and had to run out in the
middle and buy potato flakes.

I use a recipe I adapted from Christina Hanson. Essentially, I do what she
says below, except that I put a teaspoon of cornmeal on the bottom of the
bottle then add the drosophila media. I find it keeps the cultures from
becoming a messy liquid. I also add a pinch of yeast to the surface.

Here's her recipe.
----------------

Home made "Carolina Mix" by Christina Hanson

She now sells this mix. http://www.doylesdartden.com

1 cup of powdered sugar
4 teaspoons Methyl paraben
8 cups potato flakes
1/2 - 1 cup of brewers yeast.
Makes approx. 30 1/3 cup cultures.

Sift the powdered sugar and the Methyl paraben into a gallon or larger
ziplock bag or container and shake well.
Add brewer yeast and shake again.
Add the potato flakes to the ziplock bag and shake well.

Use equal volumes of fly mix and water. I use 1/4 cup per 1 litre container.

Methyl paraben, also called Tegosept is a mold inhibitor. It can be
purchased from Carolina Biological 800-334-5551 / www.carolina.com.
------------

I make up four bottles bottles weekly, two for D. hydrai and two for D.
melanogaster.

I originally got the flies for my livebearing halfbeaks and some killies but
it is amazing what will eat fluitflies off the water surface. These fish are
in tanks with epiplatys or halfbeaks and learned to eat flies. Bumblebee
gobies, Zoogenicus tequila, Heterandria formosa, Iriatherina werneri,
Melanotaenia praecox.

Best wishes,

Earl
