Re: [Killietalk] Breeding and Lights
Hi Keith
With orchids it's usually more of a temperature issue (provided they are
getting enough light). Many have fairly strict temperature requirements
that include day and night temp to set blooms. For example Intermediate
temperature species prefer their days in the 80's with the nights 15 degrees
lower. I have several species that will bloom in the fish room which has a
fairly consistent temperature but other that will never bloom in there.

Very good! This coincides with my botanical training as well. I've heard
rumor that perhaps some quirky orchids can measure photo period, too. Who
knows. Mine hardly ever bloom. I'm always impressed with the depth and
breadth of knowledge possessed by killie folk.

Plants like pointsettias need 12 hours of darkness but the amount of
light(hours of light) can vary greatly. Since alot of light timing blooming
plants are grown indoor under artificial light you can get improved growth
rates by using 24 hours of light and
12 hours of darkness. Plants measure the length of night not length of day.
This is my horticulture training showing through. We used this process in
college for christmas cacti.
