Re: [Killietalk] Slow growing fry
Jeff,
1st if you noticed a semi-lack of reply, that's because many (or most) of
the regular posters here have already typed dozens of replies to this
question over several years...There are some gems of info in the archives
here on KT...
I'm hardly an expert on raising killie fry, so before I share what little I
know, I'd encourage you to go to Tim Addis site...there are a few snippets
here and there about which fry grow slow, which ones are best left w/
parents, et...All may/may not be applicable for your particular case (for
instance my A.ceilae grow normal-fast), but the info is fact based & pretty
reliable
-I am currently experimenting with crowding; since all my fry are on a
central system, the inch/gal rule is not a factor, nor is food supply...best
I can tell, close proximity does seem to affect fry growth rates, based on
my tenative scant observations, seems some killies (like nothos) being more
affected than others
- Just changing BBS cyst seems to make a big difference, as does timing the
hatch...once I got better eggs and disciplined with catching my naupalli on
time, my fry hatches look a lot more consistent in size...heck I went so far
as playing around with bulb wattages and distance from the hatch solution
just so I could get my naupalli to hatch at a predictable time...these more
experienced killie keepers do this in their sleep...it's not mentioned very
often, but it is important...
- On this list, many folks have mentioned giving your fry a variety of
foods...problem is they sorta "understate" that, it does make a big
difference!!!...not all fry respond to all foods, and I noticed that
microworms (or bottom foods) are sometimes ignored at certain stages...if
the fry need a "swimming trigger", I add water from my daphnia tanks in
between BBS feedings along with java moss...not sure what the hell they are
eating, but they are snapping at "something"...anyway there is a real
difference in growth if the fry eat all day as opposed to stuffing them 2-3
times a day...

I recently hatched out some killi fry and now it is 3 weeks later and they
are just a little bigger then when they hatched out. Is this normal? Any
help will be appreciated. Jeff
