Re: [Killietalk] API is looking for photos

I was just musing as to whether or not we were biting the hand that feeds
us. And I actually still don't know if API is such a hand. Who's to say
that if someone doesn't feel generous with a couple of photos that all
future API donations, which may or may not be significant, "dry up?"

>> Oh I see, 35 years of work, thousands of hours of work, thousands

of images taken in order to develop the skills in order to produce quality
publishable images is nothing................. not to mention the artistic
and intellectual property involved.................................<<

I certainly didn't mean to insinuate that it was "nothing." With all due
respect to your position as a very highly regarded individual in our
organization, I was just suggesting that you would have pursued this aspect
of our hobby(photography) regardless of whether or not you thought API
desire to purchase some of your photos some thirty years hence. You do it
because you like it, not for profit. You, and many like you, already have
the photos. Hence my "cost us nothing" comment.

>> the owner of the intellectual property makes individual decisions

on what should be done with his/her work and it really does have
value.............................<<

True. And I'm sure not saying, "Tony, pony up and send these people some
pictures." Those beautiful photos we see with your name on them are
certainly your property to do with as you see fit. I'm a teacher (though I'm
sure you can't tell from my poor sentence structure) and do not have the
private sector experience where ideas are guarded jealously and patented.
If someone has a good idea, they share it with other teachers with no
concern for "intellectual property rights." We do it for the greater good
of the students which we are all trying to educate. I'm not saying this is
right or wrong, just my experience. Your experience seems to be different.

>> It is certainly anyone's right to ask
......................... but the issue of not costing anything is a
little removed from reality.<<

I would also suggest that none of us get "justly compensated" for the hours
we put in to our hobby. We do it for the love of our hobby and all of its
facets. And again, I'm not trying to convince you to part with some of your
photos, just wondering how "neighborly" we are obligated to be. I don't have
a sense one way or the other. I trust, however, you feel API should be
charged for the rights to any of your pictures irrespective of any
relationship they've fostered with the killifish hobby or the possible
publicity killifish would receive as a result of their proposed ad campaign.
