Re: [Killietalk] Baensch atlas

My favorite multiple fish species book series. Books 1-4 and the photo-index of 1-5 are in english. I currently have the photo-index and books 1-3. Book 4 was recently translated and is only available in hardback at the tune of 55-60 bucks, I'll wait till they come out in paperback and drop price. Books 5 and 6 are available in German. I also have the Mergus cichlid Atlas which is awesome if you're interested in s/a dwarf's. The Baensch photo-index is laid out similar to the Axelrod books. there are separate sections for cyprinids, characins, catfish, killifish, etc which are highlited with printed tabs on the edge of the page so you can see where each section starts and begins. Each page has 6 photos with scientific name, common name (if available) and has a book/page#. Example: Rivulus Amphoreus 2/676. In other words, if you wanted to read more about Rivulus Amphoreus, you'd grab book 2 and flip to page 676 for the larger photo and information. The photo index!
  will
also give some short stats on most fish. It will tell you whether the photo given is of a male or female, Where the fish comes from, type of breeding and/or difficulty, size, social behavior, feeding, temperature, PH and hardness values. there are also some other pages scattered through the book with other info and photos. There is also an index with the fish listed alphabetically by genus, species or common names. The books 1-6 usually have 2 fish species listed per 2-page foldout. Photos on one page, info on facing page. It goes more into detail about the fish. These are by far my favorite books over all species. The Aqualog has more and better photos but very little info from what I've seen. I plan to have both actually as money permits :) enough rambling, Kyle
