Re: [Killietalk] Acriflavine sub? Was RE: Use of Acriflavine

Maroxy is erythromycin, an antibiotic that works primarily on Gram positive
bacteria by preventing their reproduction. Almost all tropical fish
infectious bacteria are Gram negative, so it would have little effect,
although it is useful on some coldwater fish infections, and is also useful
in killing off red algae. Methylene blue's main use is to provide an
alternate oxidative pathway to aid in respiration under emergency conditions
and, more importanty, as blue ink. It doesn't affect fungi or bacteria,
although there are related drugs with real effects (but not on the market
for the hobby). I've always considered methylene blue as a way to darken
water to protect light-sensitive eggs like those of angelfish. Both
methylene blue and maroxy are in my view peddled to aquarists the way fancy
fishing lures are peddled to fishermen. The best way to keep fungi out of
your containers is to take out dead things. Fungi don't generally attack
live things, unless they overwhelm the container. In that case, waste
products from the fungi might degrade water quality enough to kill the
remaining live eggs, and that might be the way fungi kill, rather than
directly attacking live eggs, although it could work both ways..
