[Killietalk] Convention News

Hi All:

The Suncoast Killifish Society, your host for the 2006 A.K.A. convnetion in Tampa, May 26-28, wishes everyone a happy and healthy 2006.

Convention Report: January BNL.

Your convention committee is very pleased to announce that Dr. Brian Watters, an internationally recognized expert on the genus Nothobranchius, has graciously accepted our invitation to speak at the Saturday evening banquet, May 27, 2006. Dr. Watters is one of the most engaging and knowledgeable people in the hobby today, and his vast field experience as well as his ability to propagate and maintain the most difficult Nothobranchius species is unparalleled. In conjunction with various African institutions, he continues to contribute to research important to understanding annualism in Nothobranchius, and the issues involved in conserving and protecting their habitat. Also known as a superb photographer and lecturer, the convention participants will surely be treated to a banquet workshop that will be remembered for many years to come.

Next month we will review the entire workshop line up in detail, but as a teaser, the following people have agreed to participate in our workshop program: Dr. Tony Terceira will discuss the impact of recent DNA research on the taxonomy of some of our favorite groups of killies. Henri DeBruyn, an internationally recognized expert in the breeding of plant spawning killifish, will present his incredibly successful fishroom operation. One of our most successful breeders, Jack Heller will discuss his methods and experiences, and Dr. Roy Yanong, the staff Veterinarian at the University of Florida's Aquaculture Laboratory here in Florida will provide expert guidance on fish diseases and management techniques. To round out the program, our long time friend Lee Harper will show us how to drill tanks for flow through water systems, members of the Suncoast Killifish Society will give a comprehensive workshop on culturing live foods, and as in the year 2000 convention in Tampa, we will !
end the Saturday workshop program with a panel discussion headed by our group of expert breeders.

A word about online registration. If you are making two or more individual or family registrations, please do not combine them into a single registration as this will cause an error in calculating the registration discounts related to meal purchases.

If paying by credit card, we ask that you register through the A.K.A. website process. This process directs you to Paypal to arrange payment. You do not need to be an account holder to use Paypal to pay for your registration with a credit card. The directions to do so are easy to follow. If you have a Paypal account, you may pay directly from your account to the convention account as well. After payment, you will be directed back to the A.K.A. site to complete the information related to number of entries you plan to bring. This information is optional and is only requested to aid our planning.

Mail-In Registrations. Registration forms will be available in upcoming BNL's. They are also available upon request, or as downloads from the convention website (See below) Because of security concerns, we do not plan to process credit card payments with mail-in entries. Mail-in entries are to be accompanied by payment in personal check or any recognized money order. Foreign mail-in registrants are requested to provide an international money order in U.S. funds as payment.

If you do not have internet access and wish to pay via credit card, we suggest that the special checks all credit card companies provide to their account holders be used. We can process this as an ordinary check and your credit card will be charged as a cash advance.
