Re: [Killietalk] give linneatus its proper name

Even Clown Killie I have seen a number of variations
on - Crown Killie is my favourite, but also Cown
killie and Cloon Killie, since they seem to be turning
up in stores. But then again I have seen them for a
buck each here, so what incentive is there for the
store owner to really care? Make 30c and get them out
as fast as possible. But add monrovia (did i spell
that right??) and to some of us it is suddenly very
valuable - even if no one else knows it.

I think really for killifish you dont want complete
newcomers, rather the person who has maybe kept fish
on and off and has a little experience.
All those people with the community tank in the living
room are obviously interested to some degree, so how
do you get them to go to the next step of adding a
tank underneath and so on.

Also have to agree, "Finding nemo" damaged a lot of
reefs..

Killies have so much to offer, so to me it is puzzling
why they are still seen as a fringe part of the much
larger hobby. People in the last couple of years spent
1000's setting up marine tanks and most are now
sitting in garages empty.

Even something like bettas people are paying a fortune
for and have hundreds of little containers etc.
Although breeding for color, fins, two heads etc is
not a respectable part of killi keeping. But still
that would contradict the killi = small tank problem.

Oh and my partner is in the category of "wow thats a
pretty fish... can we go to the shoe shop now.." so
obviously some people are just not interested. Which
is fine by me (except the paying part - it is not like
she has no shoes already), everyone is different, it
is really how many of those people keeping bettas
cichlids catfish and so on are completely unaware of
this whole side of the hobby, since they are obviously
serious people. I have even seen more Apistogrammas
(fully labelled) in stores the last couple of years,
and keeping them seriously must be similar to keeping
killies.
