Re: [Killietalk] Feeding 120 tanks

I decided to rewrite the first draft after getting
interupted. With alot of tanks you need to think about
assembly lines. Pre make/mix items for later use like
food for live food cultures(for my fruit flies I mix
the sugar/potatoe flakes and the water/applecider
vinegarin large batches then mix these in the bottles
I raise them in). Keep the distance down between
points so you are not walking all the time and are
actually get work done. Skip picking eggs unless you
have a real reason to like new fish to you or
selling/trading the eggs. I use a damp mop storeage or
just drop the mops into another tank/shoebox for
hatching.

I used to raise livebearers 15 years ago and got
upto 80 breeding tanks and a few outdoor pools(old
bath tubs plastic lined ponds ect). I fed chopped red
worms, mossy larva, and daphania during season. I gave
up chopping the redworms with a knife. I rinsed them
off and placed them in what was marketed as an onion
dicer. The onion dicer was a glass jar with a flat
bottom and the lid had a spring loaded multi bladed
cutter. Just a few plunges of the plunger and I had
worms ready to feed. Another big help was all the
breeding tanks were in one spot in a straight line
along one wall of the basement. Of a morning before
going to school I would run down the line giving flake
food which took about 3-5 minutes. Of an afternoon
when I got home I fed what ever live food I could
catch to them in much less time than it took to
actually catch the food. The ponds were given a little
flake food every evening which was kept in a
tupperware container near them. Water changes took me
4 to 6 hours as it was all done with syphon hose and
buckets and 55 gallon drums for treating water.

With killies I am upto 9 tanks. I am just about to
the maxium number of tanks for this house. We have 4
kids living in a small 3 bedroom single wide mobile
home. So we have boxes stacked up with summer clothes
in the winter and winter clothes in the summer and
such as the master closet is less than 4 foot of
hanger space and that is the largest of the closets. I
dream of having a fish room/basement again and a 400
or more gallon tank full of cichlids(plywood
constructed). I saw an article online about a guy with
1700 gallon shark tank in his basement. I just love
fish.

                               Later, John
