Re: [Killietalk] "Setting the hook"
When I was around 10, that would make it the late '60s, my cousin got
married to a guy who was deep into fish. He gave me a 5 for Christmas
the following year and the hook was set. He acquired a few killies from
the Cleveland Aquarium Society, so of course I was interested in them
too, and he eventually gave me a pair of blue calliurum. They were a
beautiful deep blue fish with striking yellow edges on all their
unpaired fins. I have never been able to positively ID them, but the
closest I can come to finding a picture on the internet is a variety of
Fundulopanchax gardneri possibly akure.
I have kept fish almost continuously since then, with 5 unsuccessful
ventures into killifish. In each case but the last I got eggs, so I
know I am doing something right, but never managed to raise any young.
I think it is because, with a wife, three kids, a house and a job, I
never had the time for the intensive fry rearing techniques I read about
in this forum. Although I currently have no killifish (my latest
attempt ended about 6 months ago when my gardneri, having produced no
eggs in a 30 were being moved to a smaller tank. In the process they
all leapt to their deaths from a temporary holding tank.) I enjoy
reading this list, it is the best aquarium news group I can find and I
learn a lot. I plan on giving them another try this spring, with a
species that can be raised by leaving the parents with the fry in a
heavily planted tank.
Thanks for indulging my walk down memory lane!
