Re: [Killietalk] "Setting the hook"
I am interested in the various responses, just like Dave said. My own
experience was 36 or so years ago, but it is vivid in my mind. I regularly, every
other week or so, stopped at a small but well run fish store located in the
owner's basement in Wilmington, Delaware. Chuck's Tropicals, I believe it was
called. One day I saw a pair of Blue Gularis at a high price of $9.00/pair. That
was pretty high for those days. However, I bought the pair and established them
successfully in a tank. The next time I stopped in the store, I bought a pair
of Aphyosemion australe -- chocolate lyretails. The following week I stopped
again and after looking over the selections, I did not find any killies, so I
asked Chuck whether he was going to get some others. He responded that he got
them only when they were available from a local breeder and they were limited
in supply, but that I might be interested in joining the AKA. He had some
membership information pamphlets and I took one home. I joined soon after and the
rest is history. Unfortunately that type of store doesn't exist anymore, at
least not in this area. I do believe, however, that putting membership
information into local fish stores and general aquarium societies is a useful approach.
If any BOT members feel the need I am willing and able to supply an updated
membership trifold template as a Word document, for printing, Or, I can print
them and send a batch to any local group for distribution, for the cost of
mailing.
