Re: [Killietalk] Setting the hook

I never heard of killifish during my first round of fishkeeping; I kept
a community tank, getting fish and supplies from some good and some not
so good LFS in Berkeley and San Francisco. But when I decided I
wanted to get back into fish again, I started reading about fish on the
internet. I think I found killies by way of the "Good and bad beginner
fish" article on fins.actwin.com, which mentioned cinnamon killies.
Googling that species name led me to sites with pictures of yet more
spectacularly beautiful fish, lots of which were killies, and to the
amazing photo galleries of killies on so many sites. And I just loved
the first pairs of gold australes I saw at the local fish club auction
(although when the bidding went to $25/pr on the second and last bag of
them I gave up). At the next auction I was more determined, and they
were cheaper, and though they didn't ever reproduce for me, the
gardneri I bought at the same time did. And I was hooked--they were
beautiful, hardy, and gentle on my plants. Plus, they reproduced
themselves without much effort on my part, without ever threatening to
overwhelm the tank. Perfect.
