I think you may just be feeding the 3-year-old the  wrong stuff Lisa. ;) Dennis has the right idea. When our daughter was  three, she was my faithful companion.
  
  I needed to watch her more closely than I did sometimes. One time,  while I was feeding the killies, I noticed her over in the corner,  reaching into a trout chow container and glomming them down.  Evidentially no harm done. Of course, when placed in the bathtub, she  naturally swam upstream. ;)

He'll probably enjoy the free "killie crisps" - the fish that find a hole
in the tank cover and decide to go "over the wall".
