Re: [Killietalk] "Setting the hook"

For myself I have to say that Killifish was one of
those things that every good book showed pictures of,
but was virtually impossible to see in a local shop
(Sydney, Australia), I also clearly remember seeing a
Killi display as a kid at the Royal Easter show in
Sydney - it used to be an agricultural show. But it
was many many years later before I come across them -
A. australes like 99% of keepers first killi in a
local store. But that was 15 years ago.
I still think a big problem for most people who are
interested is knowing where to find them or who to
ask. There is still a mythology around killifish that
they are hard to keep and so on. I think other
aquariasts tend to view killi keepers as some sort of
secret society, swapping brown paper bags down dark
alleys.
But for me it was definitely books, and some old TFH
mags with an odd article or two. If i had not known
what they were the show would not have made such a big
impression on me - these were the fish that were so
specialised and serious (so my books said) - i was 13.
One thing i think that has made it better and easier
for people starting has been the internet. In rural
areas who do you even ask? Now you can just go online
and find plenty of like minded people.
So to finish up and comment on aquabid, i think it is
a great way to expose people to killifish and also
make it easy for them to get started. Yes there are
risks, but everything has risks. But either way I
think the hardest thing for people to get started has
always been to find the right people or some fish and
or eggs to start with.

For the AKA or any killi club, there is no point
advertising to yourselves. Let people get the fish
first, then they will join. Not join and then get the
fish.

My 2.618 cents worth.
