Re: [Killietalk] A vent and advise needed

Lisa,

I agree with Barry on this. I recall reading Dr Goldstein's book back in
the dark ages when I first entered the hobby and he essentially reports
that the causative bacteria for dropsy is "everywhere" and its probably
in our tanks 100% of the time. Only when a fish is weakened by some
other problem can it take hold, multiply and overcome the fish's immune
system.

I would not spend time trying to eliminate the bacteria, I see that as
futile. What I would do is look for what is causing your fish to be
susceptible. Why are they sensitive and unhappy in the first place? I
notice you telling us that you may be doing 75% water changes every 2
days. Is this water out of the tap? That sounds a little extreme to me
and that in itself may be stressing the fish. Most people I know do
20-30% changes weekly or biweekly and that is usually sufficient. (OK,
here come the letters from the auto-water-change people disagreeing with
me. Lee and Charles, I'm ready, fire away)

On the other hand, keep in mind that dropsy is a strange disease and
after years few people can explain it. On the rare occasions I do see
it, It seems to attack my Blue Gularis, selectively, while ignoring
everything else in the fishroom. Why? I have no idea.

Hi All,

Yesterday was not my day and I know all of you will understand. I came
home from work and discovered 2 of my tanks had dropsy (no David not the
BG) It came on fast. I change 50-75 % of water every 2 days in my tanks,
I feed mainly live food, some times frozen making sure none goes
uneaten...could it have come in on newly purchased java moss? I can't
figure it out. So I spent half the night "scrubbing, mircowaving...you
know typical panic mode".I am going out as soon as the LPS open to get
some wide specturm anti-bioctics just to treat all the tanks just in
case...Thats the correct thing to do right?..

I use sponge filters so each tank is seperate but I do use the same
"baster" to feed grindals, BBS, ect. so I have a fear I may have spread
it

During all that I discoverd All 3 of my grindal worm cultures crashed,
for no apparent reason. I use the poly-foam method.....anyone have an
extra working culture they are willing to spare? it will be a few weeks
before mine will recover, email me off list - I have a papal account.

My poor husband listened to all my whinning and crying but I am not to
sure he understood...poor man.

Any hints and or advise are welcome....back to changeing water and
adding salt
