I think a dark color is likely to make them more comfortable. If I 
cannot paint the shelf, I often paint the outside of the bottom glass 
(and back, even sides?) with a dark paint.

By all means, provide some bbs and maybe tiny worms as soon as the 
babies are big enough to graduate from infusoria. It will be a long time 
before they can take most adult foods. If you feed a slurry, as Monte 
has suggested, be sure it has a good supply of newly-hatched bbs and 
other small bits.
